Crystals Are In Hoodoo By: Root Doctor Kye One of the strangest things I have watched happen online is folks reducing crystals to “white folks’ spirituality” while talking about a tradition created by Black people who have always worked with the natural world. A crystal is not a religion. A stone is not a religion. It does not become worship because somebody recognizes that it has properties, symbolism, history, or spiritual function. And no, that does not mean every crystal you see in a metaphysical shop today has a documented historical use in Hoodoo. Those are two completely different statements, and I need us to learn how to hold both of them at the same time. Historical Hoodoo shows us Black people working with what was available to them. Roots. Herbs. Dirt. Water. Minerals. Metals. Bones. Trees. Plants. Household materials. Things purchased from spiritual supply stores. Things gathered from the land. Things inherited from African, Indigenous, Christian, regional, and family knowledge systems and transformed through the lived experiences of Black people in America. That is one of the reasons I push back so hard against the idea that something must look exactly like it did 100 or 200 years ago to be authentic. Our ancestors worked with their environment. So do we. But I also believe in knowing the difference between historical documentation and modern practice. If I use something today, I do not have to lie and tell you my great-great-grandmother used it. I can tell you, “This is how I work with it now.” And then there is the science. Crystals have measurable physical properties. Quartz, for example, is piezoelectric. Under mechanical stress, it can generate an electrical charge. That is physics, not a belief system. Crystalline materials have practical applications throughout modern technology precisely because matter has properties whether we spiritualize those properties or not. Does science automatically prove every spiritual claim somebody makes about a crystal? Absolutely not. But it does destroy the argument that crystals are just imaginary “magic rocks” with nothing interesting happening inside them. And for my Christian folks who ask, “Why are y’all worshipping rocks?” Who said anything about worship? 😂 The Bible itself is full of precious stones. Stones appear in priestly garments, sacred architecture, memorials, and descriptions of the holy. Creation is repeatedly used to demonstrate the power and craftsmanship of God. Recognizing something in creation is not the same thing as worshipping the creation. I can appreciate the properties of rosemary without worshipping rosemary. I can work with water without worshipping water. I can recognize the spiritual significance of dirt without bowing down to dirt. A crystal is no different. This is also why I teach Hoodoo as a living tradition. Preservation does not require paralysis. Our ancestors could only work with what existed in their environment, their communities, their markets, and their time period. We are still doing the same thing. New access does not automatically equal inauthenticity. The question is whether you understand what you are doing, why you are doing it, where the practice comes from, and whether you are being truthful about what is historical, what is inherited, and what is your own practice. You do not preserve Hoodoo by freezing Black people in the past. You preserve it by knowing the past well enough to recognize the tradition while it continues to live. And THAT is why my crystal collection stays growing. Everyone needs to start minding their own business. Join me Tuesday, September 1 at 7 PM CST on TikTok Live for a FREE class on the science, history, and spirituality of crystals. #hoodoo #crystals #education
