Questions like “Where do you see yourself in five years?” are often explained as a way to evaluate commitment but both employers and applicants face uncertainty about what the next five years will look like. For many jobs especially entry-level ones, there is a 90-day probationary period. If an employer’s biggest concern is whether someone will successfully adapt to the job duties, learn the role, and make it through probation, wouldn’t questions about the next 3–12 months be more directly relevant than asking someone to predict where they’ll be five years from now?
