Sanmon Gosan no Kiri by artist Toyohara Kunichika, 1896, captures a definitive moment in late nineteenth-century ukiyo-e printmaking and theatrical history. This vibrant woodblock print depicts the legendary Meiji-era kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō IX. He is shown performing the celebrated role of the notorious outlaw and folk hero Ishikawa Goemon. Dressed in an ornately patterned, golden wave costume, Danjūrō is instantly recognizable by the fierce expression, brilliant red wig, and a golden dragon crown traditional to the legendary play. The print showcases Kunichika’s masterful ability to translate the high drama, vivid coloration, and physical intensity of the Meiji-period theater stage onto paper.
