“The Last Torch: Singing for Afghanistan” is not just a documentary about music. It is about resistance. In a country where women are increasingly being pushed out of public life, even singing has become an act of defiance. The BBC documentary follows Afghan women, especially two sisters behind the secret movement “Last Torch,” who continue writing poetry and performing music while hiding their identities under burqas to protect themselves from Taliban retaliation. Through anonymous performances, they try to preserve a part of Afghan culture and female expression that is being systematically erased. In 2026, Afghan women are still facing severe restrictions on education, work, freedom of movement, media participation, and artistic expression under Taliban rule. Many girls remain banned from secondary education, female artists have disappeared from public spaces, and women speaking publicly can itself become dangerous. That is what makes documentaries like this important: they document voices the world is slowly getting used to ignoring. .
