My mom’s best friend did something similar for us. In the last year of my parents marriage, there was quite a few times where my mom would have to wake us up, in the middle of the night to leave. Her best friend would let us come over, no matter what time it was. Every time she opened the door, she was smiling and excited to see us. She pulled blankets out and made it feel like she was inviting us to a slumber party. It was years later before I put it together- she didn’t want us to be stressed about what was happening and she was making sure we always felt welcome
