@gerrybrooksprin: Am I wrong? What do you think? Has this been your experience? How's it work at your school/district? #education #teacher #school #schoollife #parents
that depends on where you apply. many places absolutely will not meet you being in a resume/ application. they must be done online. nor will anyone meet with you, for these summer only positions

maybe school districts are different but most companies don't want people to stop by to apply

My husband was a hard rock miner. He taught me the art of “rustling” for that job you want. I walked into the office and let everyone know I wanted the job.

You have to be careful. Some principals will get annoyed if you are reaching out etc. It's a hard situation to navigate.

Seems to me like employers would be hesitant to hire teachers because they would leave at the start of the new school year.

Great info! The art of applying for a job has been lost. Make finding a job your new job.

the classy move they make around here is not contacting you after the interview to tell you they selected someone else.

A friend of mine from the maintenance department told me that she had heard of two positions that needed to be filled in the district I work for. Both were to be a Para in SPED. didn't even bother turning in an application online. My friend told me who to contact. and I ran with it. Sent a long email to the SPED director about who I was and like a spark notes version of my resume. I also emailed a copy of my resume to her. long story short, I was at the board of Ed the next day with her and one the principal of the school I work at now. This will be my 5th year :)
Sometimes you gotta make your self known ;)

I find it’s about 50/50. Half principles like to be contacted and half not. But I’d rather the risk of annoying a principal to increase my other opportunities.

So true! I got hired 9 years ago and they said there were over 600 applications. You basically had to know someone. I was going to each principal personally and introducing myself with a folder for each. That’s how I got my job. The principal that hired me did not have a position available but a few weeks later one opened up and she pulled out my folder and had hr add me to the interview panel. I was the first person in my cohort to get a teaching job out of grad school.

I would add sub! Sub then build that rapport as well. Great advice!

This is a similar concept to what Ken Coleman calls the “Proximity Principle!

My problem is when you get an interview for any type of job and you don’t hear anything back after the interview. I think coming in for an interview deserves at least an email saying we chose another candidate.

This is with any position in the real world. You have to find a way to stand out from all the others.

Great advice! Especially during these difficult times of finding quality staff! Lots a people looking for jobs but few of them are looking for work!! Give me the applicants that are willing to put in the extra effort…all day long!!

Yep, I became working age as a teen in the mid 90's. My dad drilled it into me that you have to go check in and let them know you are interested. My first job was good ol Mickey D's and I walked back in there the day after I turned it in to check in. I believe they pulled my application right then and interviewed and hired me on the spot.

I have had three positions since 1996 ... All three I had were because I randomly showed up at the school. I'm extra fun and outgoing though. Like you'd hire me in a heartbeat if I lived closer than Shelbyville. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 I'd be your new bestie.

I've been thinking about this after seeing so many people saying they can't get their resume passed the AI HR. Why don't they drop their resume off in person? Applies not just to teachers.

I agree, as an administrator for 18 years and teacher if 10 I thought my resume would speak for itself. Nope, didn’t get a call for an interview even with my doctorate and experience. I should have went and talked to the Assistant Supt. It isn’t about what you know. It’s more about who you know.

I’m in JCPS, at least at my school, we don’t even get to view external applications because there are so many internal applications at this time. It’s a tough time to graduate with a teaching degree.

Many districts tell applicants not to do that. Do I listen to that rule? No. I still email the principal with my resume.
