I always talk about niceness being performative. That’s why when says I’m not nice, I vehemently agree. I say I’m not nice, I’m kind. Kindness shows your true character.

Absolutely nailed it. I will add that on top of niceness being a tool of the powerful for silencing people, having the activation energy for niceness is often a privilege. If your bills aren’t paid, if you aren’t sure where your next meal is coming from then that stress makes it so difficult to be nice. And the expectation of maintaining niceness in order to veil some underbelly of horrors is another example of that tool of the powerful. Kindness is a different story.
