I feel like there’s two layers to it. The first layer- it’s a very trendy/ragebaity advertising technique that’s easily accessible for small tiktok shop affiliates and you see every small tiktok shop affiliate using it. That type of advertising is proven to get a rise out of anybody on the financial spectrum. The second layer is a bit more nuanced. The people in the financial situation you described (literally $20 in the bank) obviously know that they’re broke. If an opportunity for a small, perceived victory is presented to them, with such a low barrier to entry, they’re going to take it because it’s psychologically rewarding in that moment. The behind-the-scenes logic of the impulse buy.

It could also be for people who regularly buy luxury products, but are *considering* pulling back on luxury products to save money in this rapidly-crashing economy. Because “no no no, don’t stop buying our nonessential products, this one is cheap enough to not make a difference in your bank account, you can still afford it!! Don’t stop buying our stuff!!”
