@newbeginningspsychology: Many people think dissociation means having "multiple personalities," but dissociation actually exists on a spectrum. According to the theory of structural dissociation (developed by researchers including Onno van der Hart, Ellert Nijenhuis, and Kathy Steele, and often taught by trauma expert Janina Fisher), trauma can cause parts of the self to become separated in order to survive overwhelming experiences. 💛 Primary Structural Dissociation Often seen in PTSD. A person may have an "everyday functioning" part and a trauma-survival part that holds traumatic memories, emotions, or sensations. 💛 Secondary Structural Dissociation Often seen in complex trauma. Multiple protective parts can develop, such as people-pleasing, perfectionistic, angry, avoidant, critical, or self-soothing parts. 💛 Tertiary Structural Dissociation Seen in DID and some forms of OSDD. There is a greater degree of separation between parts, with distinct identities, memories, emotions, and experiences. Dissociation is not weakness. It is an adaptive survival response developed by a nervous system trying to protect itself from overwhelming experiences. Healing is not about getting rid of parts. It is about helping them feel safe enough to work together as a connected whole. 💛 #trauma #cptsd #dissociation #DID #Complextrauma

So, once a woman threw water on my and I proceeded to get rocks to throw at her. But that wasn’t “me”! “I” was behind in my mind thinking “hey, you really shouldn’t do that” but I still threw the rocks. I kept cursing and arguing although I knew I should stop. I just watched that happen. Would that be a kind of dissociation?

I have barely lived in my own body and now I dont feel real anymore. I think that is an expected outcome, im on trajectory for an authentic reaction to society and life experience.

I had a stroke. For almost a year after, I couldn’t dissociate (to the same level) … if I’m being honest, I miss being able to leave my body and my mind …

thank you, so many therapist without lived experience tend to gaslight symptoms which holds you there longer well that's my experience ❤️❤️❤️. I had to stop therapy with a therapist as it was causing more trauma and seek other self lead therapies to support me

What is the dissociation called where you loose control of your ability to move or speak? Im still aware of everything around me, but just lost in my mind and disconnected and what is a good way to deal with it? i cant snap myself out of it. I just wait it out and wait for the panic attack that follows

so true... the more you sit with the discomfort of the emotions the less the dissociation 👌👌

If it’s a “beautiful defence mechanism”, why would you need to stop using it? If it’s a coping mechanism that doesn’t harm yourself or others, and makes things easier, then why is it a problem that needs fixing? Why is it not seen as a skill?
