I just retired as a teacher and because of one move after my first year teaching, besides my pension, I have a good six figure account. I’ve found that most teachers don’t even know about it. I started by putting a fairly small amount in it, and being tax deferred, the amount from my check wasn’t as much as I was investing. And for almost the last decade of my career, I didn’t contribute, and just let it make money. Teacher salaries aren’t great, but a little at a time pays big in the end.

If my raise is 2%, 1% goes to my 401K, 1% gets split & goes to HYSA & discretionary fund to help offset inflation. It’s not a lot, but every penny makes a difference

I've always done this, now guess what, I'm 55 and am to the point that I can keep my raise and my financial advisor told me I am fine and can start decreasing the amount i contribute. The compound interest is already doing the work from the past 35 years.

I’m getting a raise next month, so that extra income will be going to pay down debt. No lifestyle creep, nothing extra to play with. Everything is going to whatever is the current bill being targeted.
