It blows my mind that the cost of living is similar to LA and NYC, but wages are so much lower. I have friends in London who make less than half as much as friends in NYC for the same job and their rent is the same - it’s so unfair. The cost of living in cities like Sydney is high, but they also have the highest minimum wage so it evens out.

Britain is not poorer than Mississippi. Their GDP per capita is lower than Mississippi. The conclusion drawn from this information should not be that they’re poorer, it should be that GDP per capita is not the sole factor in determining what is “poor” or not.

Taxes are high for low earners and wages are shit. Example a software engineer with 20 years experience in the UK might make $90-110K. That same experience in the US would make 2-4x that base.

Increasing uni fees to £10,000+ a year, that’s minus accommodation and travel, school meals have gone up to £4 a day, bus prices have gone up, people can’t even afford food. My house hold income is a decent amount, higher than average and we still can’t afford things we NEED which are essential sometimes. It’s insane and my heart goes out to those struggling deeply

What is this obsession with GDP like it’s a metric that means anything… people in the UK still live miles better than in Mississippi. Human development index, which is a much better metric, is way higher in the UK and 14th globally

this is perhaps totally wrong, but I also think England does not have the tourism draw (outside of a few places) that the other EU countries that have also lost their industrial base are using to help support themselves.
