@in_the_waterloop: Loudoun County, Virginia — known as Data Center Alley — is home to more than 200 data centers. But according to Loudoun Water, not all of them rely on drinking water. Alton Echols says about 40 facilities use reclaimed water for cooling, another 80 use potable water, and roughly 80 operate with air-cooled systems that are largely independent of water demand. Those numbers highlight an important reality often lost in the public conversation: data centers are not all built or operated the same way. Cooling technology, water source, and local utility planning can significantly influence a facility's impact on water resources. 80% use drinkable water. Pronouncing potable weird doesn’t make their water usage less damaging.
