Based on the axis of oppression of nationality, Americans are the higher end of the power relationship, holding power over any non-American. Just like white people are to every non-white person. You are the one doing the -splaining right now. And you don’t realize this because you either confuse the axes of race/nationality (by seeing ALL Europeans as inherently white) and/or because, as the higher end holding power, you perceive yourself as the “unmarked universal” not seeing its obvious privilege over everybody else. You as a black person talking to white people from Europe is one thing. You, as an American, talking to Europeans, is another. You can put this into perspective by thinking about black Europeans. Who holds power and privilege between you, as a black American, and black Europeans? You, as an American talking in a condescending tone to Europeans, are just enacting a form of oppression you are either actively or unconsciously ignoring. You, as an American, represent the imperial hegemonic power. You are the oppressor. Again: you are the one doing the -splaining here. The American-splaining. If you don’t see this, you’ve got a lot of work to do.
