Fun fact: the 2024 DM guide say's that the rules are not supposed to be used with real world physics and specifically mentions the peasants railgun

Filip Clavin :
Peasant railgun doesn't work. It requires you to mix game mechanics with physics in a way that only benefits you. You want to be able to move an item 5000ft in the span of 6 seconds by just passing it between peasants, which requires you to ignore physics and appeal to game mechanics, then you come crawling right back to physics so the fact that it has traveled 5000ft in 6 seconds means it has the momentum from going over 500mph. Let's say you could accelerate an item this way, what do you think the dex save would be for each peasant to pass the item as it accelerates to 100s of miles per hour?

the peasant railgun would take 6000 seconds or however many peasants times 6 because they are taking the actions within the same 6 seconds

That's not how math works though, what makes the transfer of energy of the rod increase speed and what makes it not lose speed

I’d allow the players to extend their jump by their character’s height as they grab onto the ledge with a successful Strength Save, the difficulty of which depends on what the ledge is made of.

the peasant canon is a logical fallacy. it works on the fact that every one can act in the same 6 second round. but since the rod it still in the hand of the first person at the beginning of his 6 seconds and changing hands at the end of his 6 second round the 6 seconds are over and the third to 500th peasant can not even grad the rod during that initial 6 seconds. there will be no peasant canon.

The peasant rail gun doesn't work. It doesn't matter how fast the object is passed down the line. The last peasant still rolls for a throw with an improvised weapon using his strength score. You can't exploit the rules and also disregard the rules in the same action.

Yeah the rod goes that fast but going fast doesn't deal more damage and it doesn't make it any easier to throw it farther. Good for transporting commodities but not good for battle.

Balls man :
The railgun either uses RAW and reaches that speed and deals normal damage (depending on the object used, it’d be either that weapon or an improvised weapon) or doesn’t use RAW and never gets that fast anyways

also the range of jump, i treat it how i did in 2nd edition. so you can do it. its just harder the further the distance because of skill level combined with feats. i never tell my players no, just your chances of success may not be great.

listen, if my players manage to convine 1000 peasants to line up during a battle and pass a metal rod down the line in 1 round at an enemy then sure ill let them oneshot whatever theyre aiming at.

Zibani :
The Peasant railgun only works if you carefully pick and choose when to apply real world physics and when to apply game mechanics. In order for it to work, you have to rely heavily on rules as written the entire time the handoff chain is happening, then the moment the last peasant let goes if it, you have to completely ignore all of the rules of the game and treat it like a perfectly realistic simulation of reality. If you want simulationism, then you need to have simulation is in the entire time, and if you want gameification, you need to follow the rules the entire time
