The Volkssturm was a German national militia created by the Nazi government in October 1944 as Germany was losing World War II. It consisted of males aged roughly 16 to 60 who were not already serving in the military, including teenagers, older men, and those previously considered unfit for service. Poorly trained, often inadequately equipped, and organized in local units, the Volkssturm was intended to bolster Germany’s dwindling defenses against advancing Allied and Soviet forces. While some units fought stubbornly in battles such as the defense of Berlin, most lacked the training, weapons, and military experience needed to significantly affect the outcome of the war, and many suffered heavy casualties in the conflict’s final months.
