Google and Facebook *are* massively contributors to the open source software collection. They have huge projects and offer often the fastest and well rounded solution for some of the common issues :)

Yup. You could theoretically create your entire technological ecosystem yourself using parts you buy online and open source software. Problem is it requires more technical knowhow than the average layperson has. But I have faith that by the end of the century, technological literacy, true tech knowledge at that, will be as common place as reading.

I feel like open source started as a great idea and then companies started using it for free work. I’ve interviewed with multiple companies that questioned why I had no contributions to their open source projects. Like brother pay me

And if you still don’t understand most of the coders that build these, use them as projects for their resumes so it’s ultimate hack for experience

If you don't know how to do something, don't ask questions because noone will answer. Just do it your way, even better if its not working, post it and say its working. In minutes you will have comments explaing how to fix it.

Look up “UNIX Philosophy”. Imagine if we just followed those principles. Why are we scraping and regenerating everything from scratch endlessly?

And people still say nobody would work without pay. I dream of a world where I could contribute to open source projects all day without worrying about bills

Crazy to me how people don’t understand the concept of open source (or the open-movements in general). Anyway; I just turned in my Thesis about Internet-culture, digital media literacy and the democracy and freedom of online spaces, so who am I to judge, lol

Honest the best life hack is just searching for FOSS alternatives for apps, no ads, no tracking, and if something is missing you can just contribute

The most used pieces of open source code is not based on volunteering, but on highly paid engineers developing that software. There are plenty of reasons that open source makes economic sense. For example, you're releasing the code such that customers understand how to use your api, but you're charging for deployment and maintenance. Also, you can't just make a change to open source software, it has to be vetted and approved (and it's not your god given right to have your slop approved).

I firmly believe that open source saves lives and furthers innovation. Look at the Volo engineers who made the three point seatbelt. They didn’t patent it. They just let other manufacturers use their design. Also the guy who made penicillin. He also refused to patent it. There are probably a lot more that I’m not aware of but pretty cool!
