Also like…it’s HER show. It’s her story and her characters. If she wants to give all the attention to one character (self insert or not) then she can. “But the fans-“ A big part of writing a story is prioritizing writing a story that you’ll like first. It’s not just about pleasing a fanbase. Goose wrote the story she wanted. If you personally didn’t like it then thats valid. Doesn’t mean it was badly written. Just not your cup of tea.

also something ive been telling a lot of ppl is this was a passion project, NOT somrthing meant for tv or big audiences. it happened to blow up as an indie animation and goose kept the story how she wanted like she said she would. not defending goose as much as just reminding everyone this show, while open to criticism, was never supposed to be some huge new show

Characters like Rick and bojack have redeeming qualities or the story actually holds them accountable for their actions the difference is Jax has no redeeming qualities and he’s never held accountable for his actions

Every character is a self insert. That’s how you make characters. Even flawed or “evil” characters are personal faults or ideas of “I could’ve turned out like that” that are fleshed out and shown to others. This DOES NOT however, mean you can use the existence of a character as an excuse to claim that the character is evidence of real behavior and opinions belonging to the author.

I’m not the biggest Jax fan in the world but the Discourse around Jax’s character makes me think a large part of online fandom space just wants shows where a bunch of cardboard people sit in a sterile bubble playing patty cake lol. “Jax is an awful person!” Yeah thats what you need sometimes for an antagonist, in order to sow conflict, yknow, for storytelling to happen

The problem wasn’t inherently Jax, the problem was they tried to tell a big concept story in a very short amount of time. There wasn’t enough time to tie all the loose ends together or build characters.

A possibility that I think people are overlooking is that Jax’s lack of accountability is purposeful. Ragatha mentions that maybe she should’ve confronted Jax about Ribbit and I think Caine’s arc is meant to highlight that. They should’ve confronted Jax about their behavior directly like they did Caine but instead they let her run away from the issues and spiral out. They were all too nice, too worried about losing someone else, and that ended up isolating her even more until eventually she abstracted anyway

Jax being a self insert didn't ruin it. what ruined it was the fact that some other characters didn't get the screen time they deserved because it feels like everything was about Jax at some point. OOPS all Jax. ah yes I get so much backstory from some of my fave characters like gangle or zooble oh... OOPS all Jax. yes my favourite show, the amazing digital Jax show. I honestly just wish we got to know the other characters more. that's what ruined it for me a bit anyways

i think this isn't about self inserts or jax eating up all the screen time, the problem with the amazing digital circus is lack of commitment to anything gose works just lighting rounds a bunch of plot threads that dont go anywhere or get weak resolutions that dont matter anyway
