Pterygium* is a benign, fleshy, triangular growth of conjunctival tissue that extends onto the cornea, usually from the *nasal side* towards the center. It’s also called “Surfer’s eye.” *Cause* Mainly due to *chronic UV light exposure* + dust, wind, dry, hot climate. That’s why it’s common in farmers, fishermen, and people working outdoors. Light reflects off the nasal cornea and focuses on the limbus, so the nasal side is involved 90% of the time. *Symptoms* 1. *Cosmetic* = Visible red, wing-shaped growth on the white of the eye 2. *Irritation / Foreign body sensation / Redness* = Due to dryness and inflammation 3. *Blurred vision or Astigmatism* = If it grows >3mm over the cornea and distorts it 4. *Recurrent pterygitis* = Redness and swelling of the pterygium itself. #eye #opthamology #pterygium
