This isn’t media literacy necessarily. That is the show using symbolism within cultural context. That isn’t a failing of media literacy, that is just a different cultural understanding of something. Symbolism is often a shorthand to convey meaning, but that meaning is derived from the cultural context. Americans also have our own “symbolic shorthand”, as all places do.
