The CeraVe lawsuits are getting attention, but they are highlighting a much bigger problem. For decades, benzoyl peroxide has been one of the most commonly prescribed and recommended acne ingredients. Recent testing raised concerns that under certain conditions, benzoyl peroxide may degrade into benzene, leading to recalls, investigations, and ongoing litigation. But my concern with benzoyl peroxide started long before the lawsuits. Benzoyl peroxide works by creating oxidative stress. While it can reduce acne-causing bacteria, it can also disrupt the skin barrier, increase irritation, deplete protective lipids, and contribute to chronic inflammation. The skin is not a battlefield. Acne is often a symptom of deeper biological dysfunction involving hormones, inflammation, nutrient status, the microbiome, circulation, stress, and barrier health. This is the difference between conventional skincare and Functional Beauty. One focuses on suppressing symptoms. The other asks why those symptoms appeared in the first place.
