Before “God Bless Our Homeland Ghana” became Ghana’s national anthem, the country had an earlier official anthem called “Ghana Freedom.” Here’s the timeline: * 1957–1966: Upon independence on 6 March 1957, Ghana adopted Ghana Freedom as its national anthem. It was composed by Philip Gbeho. * 1966: Following the overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah, the anthem was replaced. * 1966–present: Ghana adopted God Bless Our Homeland Ghana, with lyrics by Michael Kwame Gbordzoe and music adapted from a melody by Philip Gbeho. This is a fascinating part of Ghana’s history because many Ghanaians are unaware that the country has had two official national anthems since independence. WHY WAS IT CHANGED At independence in 1957, “Lift High the Flag of Ghana” (also known as “Ghana Freedom”) as its national anthem. strongly reflected the optimism, nationalism, and Pan-African vision of Nkrumah’s government. * On 24 February 1966, Nkrumah was overthrown while on a state visit abroad. The new military government, the National Liberation Council (NLC), sought to distance the country from many of the symbols associated with his administration. * As part of that broader effort, the anthem’s lyrics were replaced through a national competition. The winning lyrics, beginning “God Bless Our Homeland Ghana,” were adopted while retaining the melody composed by Philip Gbeho. #GhanaHistory #KwameNkrumah #HistoryTok #DidYouKnow #FYP
