Auburn Beats No. 1 Georgia: AP Voters Still Leave Tigers Outside Top 25 By Jeff Roland Editor-In-Chief What more did Auburn need to do Saturday to earn a spot in the Associated Press Top 25? The Tigers went into Athens and defeated the nation’s No. 1 team, beating Georgia 27-24 on Alex McPherson’s 34-yard field goal as time expired. They overcame a 14-point deficit and earned their first victory at Georgia since 2005. Their reward from AP voters Sunday? Another week outside the rankings. Wow!! Who are these people the Associated Press have picked to vote on the rankings? Georgia dropped to No. 5, while Miami took over at No. 1. Alabama drops to No. 13 after losing to Tennessee. Auburn, meanwhile, was left looking in from the outside after delivering one of the weekend’s biggest victories. Rankings should account for an entire season, and Auburn’s 4-2 record belongs in that discussion. One victory does not erase earlier losses. But beating the top-ranked team on its home field should carry substantial weight, too. This was a victory Auburn earned through resilience and decisive plays. After falling behind 14-0, the Tigers scored 24 unanswered points. When Georgia rallied to tie the game, Auburn’s defense forced a late fumble that set up McPherson’s winning kick. Quarterback Byrum Brown finished with 150 passing yards, 115 rushing yards and two total touchdowns, helping head coach Alex Golesh secure a signature and career-defining win. There is a fair argument for keeping Georgia highly ranked despite the loss. There should also be room to recognize the team that beat the Bulldogs fair and square. I also understand print newspapers are trying to stay relevant. Most people don’t know that the Associated Press charges each paper, tv station, radio station, and ESPN thousands of dollars, some tens of thousands, per month to participate as newspapers across the country are closing en masse. Alabama used to have The Birmingham News, The Huntsville Times, and many others in print, but now only online. I get it. The poll helps sell papers. Leaving Auburn outside the Top 25 raises a reasonable question: Are voters giving enough weight to what happens on the field when the result challenges their previous rankings? It makes me question who is at the helm and are they taking this whole AP poll thing seriously. Obviously, some are not. Auburn did its part Saturday. AP voters owed the Tigers stronger consideration Sunday. Do they have to levitate or walk on water? Asking for a friend. What do you think? Did Auburn deserve a spot in the Top 25?
