I can’t blame outsiders for not understanding that we choose to live in Appalachia. Not all areas are economically depressed, but many are. Rural infrastructure does not invite businesses to come. There’s little housing, no jobs, and drug use. I drive by places I can’t imagine people living in, yet it’s home to them. The most thankful souls sometimes have the smallest( or no) bank accounts. Often those who lack basic needs are the first to offer to help when help is needed. I wish life was easier here-for us all. Our roots are buried so deeply and ground in tradition…that it keeps many stuck. Family keeps most in the area-and by default, that keeps many in poverty.

We lived that in Kentucky. Run to the outhouse to use the bathroom. At night use the pee pot that’s under our bed . This was in the 70’s …

I grew up the exact same way. No electricity, so the kerosene heater was our lifeline. It was a water heater, stove, dried out clothes, boiling water at all times kept the air from being too dry. It was miserable though.
