I don’t think I’d have been able to relate to Ruth before having a kid. I might been her as demanding and imposing. But now I empathise with her quite a bit. She still has her flaws, no doubt. I just think she became a mum way too soon and so struggles with true independence and doesn’t know how to be alone. And she does genuinely loves all three of her children so much. That’s why she’s desperate for them to connect with her even if she doesn’t express it in the best way. Such a well-written character!
