People seem to struggle with the concept of HOTD. it is literally about history being told within another book. and like alot of history it is told incorrectly. as Viserys said in the first season about Targaryens being fools to believe they controlled dragons, this is what he means. the Dragons are what has caused the demise of the house because they never really controlled them. this is and vhagar Vs Luke is the prime example

What I need people to understand is that, yes, while Jace WAS going to die regardless, the issue is with HOW IT WENT DOWN. Rhaena took an untrained, WILD dragon into battle after being bonded with him for LESS THAN A DAY. It makes perfect sense for Sheepstealer to freak out, not follow her commands, and attack everyone left, right and center. What’s more, Rhaena is an inexperienced dragon rider. While I completely understand Rhaena’s desire to help, that she only had the best of intentions, what she did was extremely foolish. Sheepstealer attacked both Moondancer & Vermax, and Baela & Jace didn’t know this dragon or who its rider was, thus distracting them from the battle. Distraction during a battle can be deadly, as we see in what happens next. Due to Jace being distracted by Rhaena & Sheepstealer, that allowed Vermax to get hooked, leading to the inevitable. So while Rhaena & Sheepstealer DIDN’T MEAN TO, they are both indirectly responsible for Jace & Vermax’s deaths.
