During the WW2 the USSR produced most of its own weapons and bore the brunt of the ground war against Germany. Between 1941 and 1945, the Red Army suffered enormous losses and destroyed the majority of German forces on the Eastern Front. U.S. aid primarily arrived to complement, not replace, Soviet military capability. However, denying Lend-Lease would also be false. The U.S. delivered approximately $11 billion to the USSR, and even U.S. documents from 1943 indicated that the Soviets were primarily conducting their fight with weaponry produced by themselves. The USSR did not win the war 'thanks to the United States'; it won as part of a coalition in which the Soviet effort on the Eastern Front was decisive, while U.S. aid was crucial to accelerate and facilitate victory. A historical estimate of the total economic cost of the war for the USSR places it around $192 billion in period dollars. This would mean that the $11 billion in Lend-Lease from USA represented approximately 5.7% of that cost.

And why is Russia doing almost same now? The Germans that trusted in Hitler also mainly believed that Poland attacked first and Soviet Union planned it and therefore they believed they are “only” defending themselves. Everything they did (and I’m not exaggerating) was excused with “selfprotection”, the same what Russia is doing now.
