Fan theories are fun. Fan canon is fun. Headcanons are fun. But the second your theory requires you to deny the author access to their own world, it stops being analysis and starts being entitlement. You can dislike the writing. You can disagree with the choice. You can say you wish it went differently. But you cannot say, “I know what the author said, but they’re wrong about their own story.” When it comes to fan cannons thats fun it’s a cool way to seep into the world of fiction that’s been made But there becomes a problem when it is a direct misinterpretation of the depth of a certain character or scene I also believe that there is writing that many people do not agree with, wishing a scene went differently so that it’s crazier or so that another fatal flaw is highlighted like memory But you have to remember that at the end of the day it is not your story, it is there authors story that they have invited you to participate in. Often some of these theories directly debate other key moments that happen, but when you disregard what an author says about a character or person as they world build you are taking the reigns and rights to their story Fan canons are fun, not liking a certain scene or character is understandable but disagreeing with an author about their own work is fundamentally different from fan canons. For example, people saying that Tamlin is not evil band not abusive when he is, or saying that a vampire ate a baby in a scene where the key part about it is that he in fact did not eat the baby. These takes take away the fundamental being of the character and do not allow the writer to show you themselves about the characters they wrote. You may not always agree, but it is not your story to agree with, and you can always turn. It off, or have your own story. #BookTok #fandomtok #fanon #medialiteracy #bookrant
