From a pharmacy standpoint, rocuronium doesn’t last as long outside the fridge compared to succinylcholine. But from a pharmacological standpoint, roc is way better!

I worked in an ED where 2 patients were paralyzed and no knew why until an almost third was and they found out the nurse was giving Roc instead of rocephin.

My unit almost always uses Rocceronium. We carry Succs in our RSI, but I’ve never seen it used.

I’ve noticed a lot of ER docs like roc and it confused me until I realized it was because it was so easy to dose that they preferred it😂 I like succs for fast on, fast off but man the contraindications are hard to get over since we typically don’t have that info in emergencies

I can appreciate succinylcholine for anticipated difficult airways out in the field, assuming no contraindications. After airway is secured, roc all the way! -a rural paramedic 😆

I used Succ for 2 yrs in one flight program. The next 2 years I used Roc in another. I never really ever worried about the duration of Roc simply because of the King LT. We also trained with the bougie for primary use, which really maximized our first attempt pass rates.

I think ROC is used more now because it gives you time after intubation to set up the vent, get scans done, and do CVC/art lines.
