@inwardora: Elephants don’t drink directly through their trunks like a straw, contrary to what many people imagine 🐘 Here’s how they actually drink 1. They place their trunk into the water 2. They suck water up into the trunk, btw an adult elephant’s trunk can hold around 8 to 10 liters of water 3. They then curl their trunk toward their mouth 4. They blow the water into their mouth and swallow it The trunk therefore acts more like a mobile container than a straw connected to the stomach The trunk is an extraordinary organ made up of around 40,000 muscles and it is used not only for drinking, but also for • breathing • detecting scents • picking up food • communicating • spraying water or mud over the body to cool down and protect against the sun and insects Another fascinating fact: when they find a water source, elephants can drink between 100 and 200 liters of water per day depending on their size, the temperature, and their activity level In dry regions, they even use their exceptional memory to locate water sources that may be dozens of kilometers away This knowledge is often passed down through the herd by the oldest females 🐘💧✨ Follow @inwardora for more incredible wildlife facts 🌍 #elephant #wildlife #funfact #discover #fypage
