@offenceregister: Hailu Getemariam London Sex Offender In 2023, a 14-month prison sentence has been imposed on a sexual offender who repeatedly grabbed and harassed young women on trains and underground services around London. Currently homeless, 24-year-old Hailu Getemariam searched the Transport for London network for lonely women to sexually assault. In one case, he stood right behind a woman on the London Underground and molested her; in another, he positioned himself close to a woman in an otherwise empty train carriage and stroked her leg. Judge Freya Newbery declared, "Mr. Hailu Getemariam, you are a deviant," at a sentencing hearing on Wednesday, November 15. You are pursuing young women for sex on public transport. The first incident happened on March 25 when Hailu Getemariam, a refugee, boarded a train at Denmark Hill. He positioned himself opposite a woman, despite the carriage being largely deserted, and starting caressing her leg and thigh with his fingertips. The court was informed that he put his leg on the front seat while doing this, making the woman feel constrained. The terrified woman turned and screamed at Hailu Getemariam as she got off the train at Beckenham Hill. Judge Newbery said, "You said that you accidentally touched her while grabbing your cell phone, but that claim is categorically untrue." On April 18, Hailu Getemariam was at a Northern Line stop where he noticed another young woman whom he subsequently followed onto the Tube. “The area was densely populated, yet you positioned yourself directly behind her and pressed your body against hers. Judge Newbery said, "You touched her behind and then put your hand between the top of her thighs." For almost five minutes, he kept his hand on her thigh. "She was actually afraid." "At a stop where several individuals boarded and alighted, she relocated to the opposite side of the carriage; however, you pursued her and positioned yourself directly across from her, maintaining a close proximity and gazing intently," said Judge Newbery. After disembarking, the woman turned away from Hailu Getemariam and called the police. On May 10, a few weeks later, Hailu Getemariam boarded a separate train and sat down next to another woman. After that, he repeatedly struck her vaginal area through her clothes. Judge Newbery stated, "She moved away when she realised what was happening, of course, but she filmed you when she saw that you then touched another woman on the bottom." A jury found Getemariam guilty of three sexual assaults despite his denial of all the charges.
