@author_matthewflagler: Every time somebody suggests higher taxes on the wealthiest Canadians, the same argument appears: “If you tax them, they’ll just leave.” But does history actually support that claim? In this episode, we’re looking at Canada’s historical tax rates, trickle-down economics, tax myths, and whether wealthy people really choose where they live based solely on taxes. #ubi #universalbasicincome #taxes #costofliving #economy

most wealthy people actually support a ubi. More consumer spending equals more sales. Taxes just force them to reinvest in the company and grow the economy. Which history has shown works

2.1% of millionaires will leave due to taxes. More millionaires leave for a warmer climate and many of them still maintain a residence in the place they call “home”

And they can move their established business to another country and still sell their product. I’ve lost three jobs in my lifetime because they moved their production to the USA because taxes were cheaper

Thank you so much for bringing up "effective tax rate", it's a much better metric, especially as "marginal rate" often confuses people because they hear "50%" and think it means people are actually paying 50% tax on all the income they earned. And, as we know, it doesn’t. Canada uses a progressive taxation system, so even someone making $1M still pays the same 14% federally on their first $58K, just like everyone else. Plus, high earners often benefit more from the capital gains inlcusion rate as they are more likely to have investment income, and 40% of the income they earned from selling those investments isn’t even taxed at all, not one dime, and that actually drops their effective rate (the rate they actually paid), sometimes massively. If anyone is still confused, effective rate = the overall rate you actually pay on your income and marginal rate = what you pay on the next dollar earned and NOT the rate you pay on all income. (I know you covered some of this but thought some more details might be useful... Hope that's okay. Cheers!)

This cost of living issue is a problem that goes very deep and started along time ago. When the country south of us started with “trickle down economics” businesses here were afforded the same breaks and hence started the demise of the middle class.

I will walk away from money if I am not treated right. I quit a job I was making $6000 every two weeks after taxes for a job that paid me $1300 because I was treated better.

Let them leave. What are they going to do, relocate all their businesses? Remember, the marginal tax rate up to 1964 (in the US) was 91%.it dropped to 70% during the 1964 tax cut.

Not to mention in a country where the rich pay more, it would contribute to a better society, less crime, less poverty, more happiness, a better quality of life. The Rich will be fighting to get in.

No doubt some will. But that ignores the majority who won’t because of things like family, friends, other social connections, peace of mind living in a safe country.

There are a good number of Countries that have recently raised taxes on the Rich… in all cases a few people left. MOST stayed, and now those Countries are in better shape than they were. Don’t ask me for proof. You can look it up.

progressive taxation prevents hoarding of wealth. it also would remove the need for sales taxes

Let um. No one ever addresses the corporate tax rate. 11% is ridiculous. I want an 11 percent tax rate and we can give them the combined 20 or so percent that I pay. This doesn’t make sense

That’s not what happens in life. The rich don’t use more of the benefits in society because they don’t even qualify for them. There should be a set percentage for tax across the board regardless of income then get rid of tax breaks. It isn’t fair that o pay a higher percentage on taxes just because I make more money
