The myth started because Homer called the sea “wine-dark” and didn’t use our exact word for blue. But human color vision hasn’t changed in tens of thousands of years.
Ancient Egyptians invented synthetic Egyptian blue pigment around 3100 BC and used it heavily in art and jewelry — they clearly saw and valued the color. Many ancient languages simply didn’t have a dedicated word for blue yet (it was often grouped with green).
Language affects how fast we name and notice color categories, not whether our eyes can see them. The “they couldn’t see blue” claim is false.

Most cultures don't have pink as a color either. It's just a light red. Colors become colors BECAUSE we name them.

Just because the word wasn’t used, doesn’t mean the sky wasn’t blue. Just because it didn’t have a name doesn’t mean it didn’t exist. This is ridiculous.

People could definitely see blue. They also had a word for it. It’s just that not much else in their world was blue, so you rarely saw the word in writing. Even then, the people reading may not know what it was unless they were living next to turquoise, corn, flour, blue jays, blue butterflies, blue flowers, etc.

So the earliest recorded reference to blue as a named color that we know of is generally credited to ancient Egypt, around 2500–3000 BCE, making it over 4,500 years old

so it's the same as us not having a name for the colour that an orange is? instead we call things that are the same colour as oranges "orange". it would sound weird to us calling something that's the same colour as the sky as "sky" or the colour of the sea "sea" but that's only because we came up with the word "blue". if we came up with a name for the colour of oranges let's call it "frinkle" then it would be odd to say how nice someone's "orange" dress is you would have to say how nice their "frinkle" dress is.

Orkhon inscriptions from the 7th century mention the sky god as "kök tengri". The word kök (gök in modern Turkish) means both sky and blue.
