@thinkingcanine: How do I make sure dogs are ok with cats… very carefully. We start with full separation, before moving closer and closer. Cats are fragile and I’d never risk a cat… we use gates, doors, leashes, and even muzzles during this process. I reward dogs for noticing the cats and for calm before, and look for perfection and calm before moving any closer.
I had two cats and dogs and I realized that if you don’t make a big deal about it they won’t my cat was besties with my sister’s cavalier

Getting to this point took YEARS. The first time the dog met cats, we thought she was going to kill them because she has such a high prey drive. We started off with using the doors as barriers and as everyone got more comfortable, we would muzzle the dog and have her out with the cats loose. We did this until we got to a point where we felt that she would not react and finally took the muzzle off. And she honestly is very neutral with the cats and only gets worked up if the older of our 3 cats hisses.
