Modern Tea Harvesting in China ☕️🇨🇳 Workers using a mechanical tea harvester in a tea garden. These machines are widely used for large-scale tea production, especially for teas like Tieguanyin oolong. A two-person team with one machine can harvest hundreds of kilograms of tea leaves in a single day, compared to just a few kilograms per day by hand. Machine-harvested leaves include older, tougher foliage mixed with tender buds. These leaves are still perfect for many types of tea, especially oolongs and mass-market blends, but they won’t be used for high-end, handcrafted teas. Premium teas (like pre-Qingming green tea or high-end oolongs) are picked by hand. Workers only select the youngest, tender buds and top leaves by hand. This takes time and skill—sometimes just a few hundred grams can take an entire day to pick. Once those premium early batches are done, larger tea farms use machines to harvest the rest of the crop. These leaves are still great for everyday drinking teas, just not the ultra-premium kind!
