@arjay_mccandless: Clip from @Arjay McCandless Show If you want to land a job at a top tier company, your resume alone is not going to cut it. #csmajors #jobsearch #careers #coding #programming
so basically we should stop applying if we only have the resume? its kind of weird that they still ask for it, no?

Catnip & Chives :
The “signal” is showing what a person can build and document. It involves architecting systems in part or in whole. The job seeker needs to figure out an efficient way to transmit that signal in a way so that they are desirable to employers. However, the job seeker can optimize their economic gain by playing hard to get (if they have sufficient optionality to do so). Companies and human beings want what they can’t have (due to their own lack of optionality and intertwined incentives/pressures from the systems they operate in… often other people in their system are the catalysts). When people want what they can’t have upon seeing a signal, they will irrationally pay a premium for it. This is basically socioeconomic behavioral arbitrage but translates to game theoretic signaling games in the labor market.

I literally took 2 weeks to prepare for a job listing, I applied and still got rejected. I contribute to open source, google, vercel, even an OSS by the same company, and still got rejected. I stopped applying right after, it was the most demotivating applications ever.

For someone in cybersecurity would you recommend utilizing open source tools or products to perform deep and heavy automation tasks? Will that work or contribute a new feature?

I'd rather work for myself than waste hours to apply for a job. If just the CV isn't good enough then that job isn't good enough for me. This hustle culture must be killed.
