My favorite part about shintoism is how the beauty and grand of nature can impact your spirit, there's just something so moving about a tori gate put in a body of water, or at the entrance of a forest, or a small shrine inside a dead tree. And I think that reverence to the quiet perfection of nature is what makes Japan such a beautiful destination, because taking care of natural resources is embedded in their daily life. (Photo taken in Yakushima, a small shrine inside a dead tree trunk, I found it so moving)

Fushimi Inari may be my favorite place in the world and that is saying a LOT. I went on a slightly rainy day and didn’t get to the top until almost nightfall. I sat in the warm hut and had a boiled egg and hot tea and felt warm and amazing. Hiking back down in the dark with all of the cats was harmonious.

Your description of Shintoism is remarkably evocative of the spirituality of the Pueblo people of the US southwest. The link between spiritual presences, particular places in the landscape, ritual, shrine, nature, ancestors, human relationships— all of it is there. The kiva being the umbilical of the world through which the people access spiritual power, their origins, and connection to each other. Mountains, trees, stones, rivers, animals, and humans being fundamentally a part of their environment and not separate from it.
