How a 1700s French King accidentally inspired one of the most hyped fragrance brands in the world. In the 1700s, King Louis XV was so obsessed with fragrance he was nicknamed “the perfume king.” He scented his court with a different fragrance every single day, hosted lavish parties where the fountains ran with perfume, and made Versailles the most extravagant-smelling court in history. But the king had a second obsession. Racehorses. He owned the finest horses in all of Europe, and in 1739 he commissioned sculptor Guillaume Coustou to carve two enormous marble horses above his perfume fountains. They became known as the Horses of Marly. When the king died, everything was left behind. The horses. The fountains. The history. Until 300 years later, a man named Julien Sprecher came along. Obsessed with both French history and fragrance, he set out to build a modern perfume house inspired by the 18th century French court - and named it Parfums de Marly, after the king’s famous horses. For years it stayed a quiet, exclusive niche brand. Then in 2016, they released Layton - named after a legendary undefeated racehorse - and everything changed. It exploded in popularity and single-handedly transformed PDM into a global powerhouse. A year later, working with master perfumer Quentin Bisch, they released Delina, which went on to win multiple awards and become one of the most successful women’s fragrances of the decade. Today Parfums de Marly is one of the most hyped fragrance brands on the planet. But most people wearing it have no idea they’re wearing a 300-year-old piece of French history. I’m a 19 year old independent perfumer from Scotland, telling the stories behind the world’s most famous fragrances and showing how perfume is actually made.
