Ryan gosling’s grandfather btw 👀 || Mohammed Amin al-Husseini was a prominent Palestinian Arab nationalist and Muslim leader in Mandatory Palestine, widely known as the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem. Born into a noble Jerusalemite family around 1897, he became a central and highly controversial figure in the political landscape of the Middle East during the first half of the 20th century. Appointed as the Grand Mufti by the British High Commissioner in 1921, al-Husseini used his religious and political authority to strongly oppose Zionism and Jewish immigration to Palestine. He later chaired the Arab Higher Committee and played a leading role in the 1936–1939 Arab revolt against British rule. Evading arrest by the British, he fled into exile, eventually establishing himself in Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy during World War II. There, he collaborated with the Axis powers, meeting with Adolf Hitler to request backing for Arab independence and opposition to a Jewish national home in Palestine. Following the war, he opposed the 1947 UN Partition Plan and attempted to lead Palestinian forces in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. His political influence waned significantly after the war, and he was eventually sidelined by the establishment of the Palestine Liberation Organization in 1964. He died in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1974. Early Life and Rise to Power Amin al-Husseini was born in Jerusalem to the influential al-Husayni family, who traced their origins to the Islamic prophet Muhammad. He received a diverse education in Islamic, Ottoman, and Catholic schools before pursuing religious studies in Cairo. After serving in the Ottoman army during World War I, he initially supported the Arab Kingdom of Syria before shifting his focus to a specifically Palestinian nationalism. His rise to prominence accelerated after he was pardoned by the British for his role in the 1920 Nebi Musa riots. In 1921, British High Commissioner Herbert Samuel appointed him Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, and he later became the president of the Supreme Muslim Council, giving him significant control over religious funds and institutions in Palestine. Political Leadership and Exile Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, al-Husseini was the preeminent leader of the Palestinian Arab movement. He utilized his position to rally opposition against the British Mandate and the growing Zionist movement. The Arab Revolt: In 1936, he became the chairman of the Arab Higher Committee, leading a general strike that escalated into a widespread rebellion against British authority. Flight from Palestine: When the British declared the committee illegal and sought his arrest in 1937, al-Husseini fled to Lebanon and later Iraq. World War II and Axis Collaboration During World War II, al-Husseini aligned himself with the Axis powers. He spent much of the war in Germany, where he engaged in several key activities: Propaganda: He broadcast pro-Axis and anti-British propaganda to the Arab world. Recruitment: He assisted in recruiting Muslims for German military and Waffen-SS units. Diplomacy: In a notable 1941 meeting with Adolf Hitler, he sought official recognition for Arab independence and a halt to Jewish emigration to Palestine. Later Years and Legacy After the war, al-Husseini escaped French custody and sought refuge in Egypt. He attempted to assert leadership during the 1948 Palestine war by forming the Holy War Army, but his efforts were largely unsuccessful. He spent his final decades in Egypt and Lebanon, largely marginalized from the new generation of Palestinian leadership. Al-Husseini remains a deeply polarizing figure. While some view him as a dedicated defender of Palestinian nationalism, his wartime collaboration with Nazi Germany has led opponents to associate his legacy, and by extension the broader Palestinian movement, with European antisemitism. || #polyester #fyp#aminalhusseini#fyp#niche
