The background is tied to recent efforts to address the so-called “Lost Canadians” issue—people who believed they should have Canadian citizenship because of their family lineage but were excluded by older citizenship laws. As rules changed, many new applications were approved, and IRCC is now re-examining some of those approvals where documentation may not meet the required standard. Some of these people may not have even step foot in Canada before. IRCC has reopened some files after concerns that the supporting family-history documents were not sufficiently verified or did not come from the original government record sources. As a result, some applicants who had already received citizenship certificates were asked to surrender them temporarily while their cases are reviewed. I don’t think it’s a big deal. I believe your message is still valid and well received but I just want to drop it for clarification sake so that some people won’t panic unnecessarily.

It’s based on a real development, but the headline is a bit misleading. What actually happened is that some people who recently obtained Canadian citizenship by descent (citizenship through a Canadian parent or ancestor) were contacted by Canadian authorities and asked to return their citizenship certificates while their cases are reviewed again. This does not affect all new Canadian citizens. The issue arose after Canada changed its citizenship-by-descent rules. Some applications were approved under the expanded rules, but the government later reopened reviews of certain cases to verify eligibility and documentation. Affected individuals were reportedly given a chance to provide additional evidence.
