Seema Mattu LOCAL SUPERSTAR 2 May to 25 July 2026 Please note the exhibition will be closed for filming on Thursday 25 June. ‘LOCAL SUPERSTAR’ is a multi-stranded constellation of sculpture, live-action film, digital animation and congregative music. At the centre of gravity is a full size tour bus, a vehicular bridge between worlds which holds the formation of Saheli (ਸਹੇਲੀ) – a sonic collective of five South Asian, queer women (Lagnajita Mukhopadhyay, Mani JNX, Ushara Dilrukshan, Zahrah Hutton and Seema Mattu) whose focus on sonic joy, musicality and collectivity stems from artist Seema Mattu’s experience of musical congregation as seva (selfless service).  Within Seema’s world building practice there are three worlds – the idyllic world, the real world and SEEMAWORLD. In the idyllic world a pantheon of sub-deities known as  ਕੀ (Ki), ਜੀ (Ji), ਮੀਂਹ (Meeh) and ਨੀ (Ni) have appointed a Sonic Council, a sisterhood transcending across multiple worlds to oversee auditions and provide support in forming Saheli. Audiences are invited to join Seema and the Sonic Council as they kickstart Saheli’s  journey towards becoming a sonic entity whose music, performances and sheer existence shifts expectations, as the band begins their quest to challenge and question misogyny, casteism, colourism and queer erasure through subversion, playfulness and collaborative musical expression. On the journey around and into the congregational space of the Local Superstar Tour Bus are seven bus stops, where we find episodes of the documusical ‘she who is a friend’ which follows the forming of this new collective of five musicians, from audition tapes through to sonic jams, interviews and live rehearsals.  Each character brings their own experience, skills, questions and curiosities to an evolving sonic landscape. Deities, sub-deities, the Sonic Council and band members shift between real-world and digitally animated realms as narratives and relationships grow through conversation and musicmaking.  The exhibition and live performance at Eastside Projects are the first stages of a national tour which will travel to FACT in Liverpool and Focal Point Gallery in Southend, evolving across each venue as the band continues to form and expand. Saheli is a perpetual work in progress. Together they are on a journey to create a sonic repository, become a self-generating musical archive, and carve out a space in music that reflects the multiplicity of who they are.  No fronts, no egos. Join them for the ride. #eastsideprojects #digbeth #birmingham #exhibition
