Rather than addressing the issue, they use good deeds to avoid accountability. They also work hard to build a positive public image. The better their reputation, the less likely people are to believe those who have experienced their toxic behaviour. Some narcissists use charity and generosity to gain admiration and recognition. The act may look selfless, but the real reward is often the praise and validation that follows. When confronted, they frequently play the victim. Instead of discussing the harm they've caused, they focus on how hurt or misunderstood they feel. Many also use their reputation as a shield. Others may defend them by saying, "They're such a nice person," making it difficult for victims to be believed. They often keep score, turning good deeds into future bargaining chips and expecting loyalty or compliance in return. The important lesson is this: judge people by patterns, not performances.
