Many left because their own party turned against them, or because a major political crisis made their leadership impossible. David Cameron was the closest thing to stability after Blair. He served for about six years, from 2010 to 2016, but even he resigned after losing the Brexit referendum. Theresa May resigned after failing to get her Brexit deal through Parliament. Boris Johnson was pushed out after Conservative MPs turned against him. Liz Truss lasted only about seven weeks after her economic plan collapsed. Rishi Sunak left after losing the 2024 general election. Now Keir Starmer has just announced his resignation less than two years after Labour’s landslide victory in 2024. Please note that the UK does not have presidential terms. A person becomes Prime Minister because they command the support of a majority in Parliament. So when we say a Prime Minister “failed to finish their term”, we do not mean it in the same way as a president. We simply mean they failed to complete the parliamentary cycle under which they became Prime Minister. The longest-serving British Prime Minister of all time was Sir Robert Walpole, who served for about 20 years from 1721 to 1742. In modern history, meaning from the 20th century onwards, the longest serving British Prime Minister was Margaret Thatcher, who served for more than 11 years from 1979 to 1990. Her government oversaw Zimbabwe's transition to independence. The shortest-serving Prime Minister was Liz Truss, who lasted only about seven weeks in 2022.
