Starting around 1 YO, I work on not reinforcing screaming. Up until this point, crying & screaming have been your child’s only way to get their needs & wants met, so of course they’re going to keep doing it as toddlers. Except now, it isn’t their only way to have their needs met, which means it’s time to reinforce talking or signing instead. Whenever my toddler screams, I ignore the behavior and act like she’s speaking normally. No dramatic facial expressions, no yelling back, no saying “stop!” and DEFINITELY no giving in. When I say no, it means no and no amount of screaming will change that. As soon as your toddler learns that, the screaming will start to decrease until it stops completely around 2.5. If I haven’t already told them “no” about something, I make them try again in a quiet voice or show them what to sign. My expectations change as they grow & at 12 MO, I only expected a polite noise to come out of their mouths or their hands to move like they’re signing anything. As their language abilities increase, so do my expectations, but exactly what expectations to set will depend on your individual child’s development. This is my 3rd child and my older girls are extremely polite & stopped screaming by 2.5 YO, so I promise this works. Traditional behaviorism would say to ignore the child completely, but that would undermine your connection & their attempt at communication, which should be recognized. We just need to show them how to ask for things appropriately and make sure we NEVER give them what they want because they screamed for it.
