@beyondflorida: The 134-year old Liberty Hill School House in Gainesville, Florida was in operation from 1892-1952. There was another building here earlier, from the 1860s, but that was torn down in order for this place to be built. Originally painted red, it was painted white years later and today both colors can be seen from the outside. It's in remarkably good condition. This was once the town of Rutledge, a town of "freedmen" (former enslaved peoples) that contained at least a dozen buildings, a boarding house, a church and this school. Today only a church, a cemetery, and this school remain, and the City of Gainesville has grown up around and replaced the town of Rutledge. #floridahistory #floridarurallife #floridahistoryrurallife #alandremembered

I'm in Gainesville. We still have schools where the students are treated sub par. Eastside High School gets the third hand books from GHS, who get the books second hand from Busholtz. Eastside is predominantly black and poor kids. The school administration is amazing, though. It's the best high school in the city despite being given the least.

My grandfather owned and operated a nightclub in Rutledge. He was a farmer with multiple acres of land. The home still stands. So much rich history in this community.

That is very cool, the County needs to put together some money for paint and necessary repairs. Or ask for volunteers I think they could find volunteers I would I’m not that far away.

this is pretty cool story but don't mention there's a spring a half mile away or they'll build a data center.
