True. Now there are very talented musicians all over the world that are able to share their music, some of these musicians would have been famous if they were creating their music during the 80s or 90s. It's a very different world now. Now a very talented band can form and share their music all over the world through social media. This makes it difficult for the big media companies to profit from more complex music.

The consolidation of radio station ownership killed it, which started with the passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. There’s definitely other factors like what you mention but that was such a huge turning point. There was no recovering from that.

as someone who played in bands and went out on the road, i can confidently say that economics changed the musical landscape. everything got more expensive. even a toronto indie label seeking to sign us privately asked me if I could shrink the band from 5 members to 3 because tour costs would be cheaper. label deals changed. music consumption habits changed. real estate inflation closed small venues. it was the perfect storm and the rock band was the casualty. but never say never...

Don't forget about how in the 80s.... there were many more BARS that hosted live music. These bands developed through that crucible.

Walked out of class and ran into a friend on campus at WVU in 1991. He had a shirt on that said Pearl Jam and I asked him who Pearl Jam he gave me his headphones and my life was changed. I found the genre of music that actually spoke to. You’re not wrong. It was a magical time!

What I’m hearing is musicians used to have to have real musical talent and studios and record companies only wanted artists with actual talent. Not sure why this is a bad thing. There’s an objective reason why music today is nowhere near as good as it was in the 90s and before.
