If you want tourists to ‘discover’ local businesses then the cities need to be built with that in mind. These fans are at the mercy of overpriced hotels and long transport chains. They get in for the match and have to get back out by terrible routes. No one is meandering around cities that are built around cars first.

Last Euros (comparable to WC, but only for European teams) I got a Round of 16 ticket for 175€, hotel for 150€ and public transport for a few €. Then you have money to spare for other things. 2026 WC has insane prices for tickets, hotels & transport - if your budget is already exceeded by just going to the game, you won‘t stay 2-3 days more to explore the city and support local businesses.

Fans are not usual tourists. They spend on food snd drink and hotels, maybe a few souvenirs for family from the last place they go.

It’s veryy expensive too! They already paid for flight, hotel, tickets to the game which were insane, not everyone can afford to explore the town.
