I always schampoo after toner as well?? It has peroxide in it so it needs to be washed out right? So schampoo twice, toner, schampoo again, treatment, conditioner.

I always condition before a toner and have never had an issue. Demi color works through oxidation, so whether it’s acidic or alkaline, it’s still going to make its way into the cuticle. As long as the conditioner is thoroughly rinsed out, it won’t prevent the toner from working properly. If the conditioner isn’t completely rinsed, you’re essentially sheering out your formula, but it’s not stopping it from oxidizing (unless it’s a formula that specifically stops color oxidation, but typically those are shampoos not conditioners). The real reason people skip conditioner is that unconditioned hair is more porous and grabs toner faster & stronger, so they can skip the full processing time. Uneven porosity runs the risk of over toning. Longevity really comes down to the type of toner, full processing time, and the condition of the hair, not whether you conditioned beforehand. But that’s just what I’ve been taught and have experienced over the years. It’s interesting to hear other people’s perspectives on things!

i was just told by another stylist - dont shampoo - just rinse cause the toner closes the cuticle.. what are your thoughts? does it depend on the color line or i should still be shampooing after lightening?

The science is fascinating. Who knew that hair dyeing was a whole lesson in chemical science.
What's science in home dyeing? What's the ph of box dye out of curiosity? Are there ways to make it last longer? Does the way you apply box dye matter?

So do you not shampoo the toner off? Just rinse off with water and then condition? New to cosmetology and eager to learn!
