This is what women’s empowerment looks like. This footage from the 1990s shows the Better Life Programme for the African Rural Woman (BLPARW), an initiative launched by the late Maryam Babangida in September 1987 to empower rural women across Nigeria. The programme was established after extensive consultations with women’s groups, development agencies, and community leaders to address the economic and social challenges facing women in rural communities. Maryam Babangida also visited villages such as Igbologun and Ilado-Odo near Lagos in 1986, where the lack of clean water, electricity, and other basic amenities reinforced the urgent need for rural development. Its vision was to raise a generation of well-informed, economically independent, and socio-politically empowered African women capable of contributing meaningfully to national development. Through women’s cooperatives, vocational training, adult literacy programmes, agricultural support, small-scale enterprise development, and community projects, the initiative created opportunities for millions of rural women to improve their standard of living. The Better Life Programme remains one of the most influential women’s development initiatives in Nigeria’s history and helped place rural women at the centre of national development discussions..
