The book On A Way To A Smile add a lot of context to Advent Children.

I can talk (at length) about all the ways Advent Children’s extended edition is not only one of the best video game movies ever made but also finally resolves this story. It’s the perfect ending in so many ways, it actually crazy to me how people hate Advent Children to this day. My singular complaint is that AC needed more character moments, more Barrett, more Cid and DEFINITELY more Vincent.

he's dealing with major survivors guilt. avoiding to confront it makes him a bad partner/friend to Tifa, to the point she has to call him out on his bs. this movie is written so well, especially if you read the books that play between the game and movie. it's one of my comfort movies 🤧

People lately have lost narrative literacy. Character progression doesn’t have to be linear. Just like in real life, depression comes and goes. Cloud is 1 of the most relatable fictional characters because he’s driven by his emotions. His grief, his will. He waivers, he’s unsure of himself, he carries his trauma with him and it pushes his actions. They did a really amazing job showcasing all of it with AC.

I’m so glad you mentioned the Jenova cells. When I first started watching Final Fantasy VII videos after playing the games as a kid everyone was talking about how clouds behavior was all the product of a mental health crisis where he just assumed Zach‘s identity without mentioning that their consciousness is literally blurred together because they shared connected Mako chambers for four years.

I think people grieve differently, but it’s the fact they made a deliberate choice for him to grieve in a way similar to his persona at the start of FF7 (quiet, loner). And the creators even stated they wanted Cloud to be similar to his old persona for marketability. It could’ve been so much more interesting IMO to see him leaning on the friends he’d come to accept and care about at the end of FF7. I’ve come to accept FF7AC (especially the complete edition), but I feel the character criticisms are valid because they chose to write him that way - when I just personally didn’t see Cloud reacting that way.

don’t forget his line as he defeats sephiroth too, “you’re wrong, there’s not a thing i don’t cherish”. showing how he truly feels about everything around him

I buy advent cloud 100% man. He was in the moment saving the world, adrenaline, purpose, everything. When that all went silent he’d have to remember everything he lost.

When I was younger and in both denial and complete ignorance of mental health and my own trauma, I admit I didn't like AC Cloud much. Now that I'm older, I get it. He's extremely relatable imo, I'm really bad about ruminating, getting stuck in negative cycles, punish myself in silence, and isolate myself from any support. I'm jealous he was able to find peace so quickly in the movie, lol. If only it were that easy.

AC Cloud was actual Cloud. People forget the reason Cloud was rejected from SOLDIER was because he didn't have a strong sense of self. FF7 Cloud is essentially Zach. Cloud had so much to unpack after realizing the life he thought he lived was a lie. That's hard to come to terms with on top of everything.

Cloud in advent child is the product of realizing he wasn’t a solider and stuff .. he’s grieving and feeling guilty and disappearing cause of that survivors guilt

It's why I love that Tifa says "Cloud is Cloud". Because this movie is the showing of who Cloud is, not the persona he built around Zack.

Glad I skipped the criticism. I thought we all had fun and enjoyed seeing FFVII characters do stuff. I guess it was just some of us 🤭

I think a lot of people were expecting Cloud to be your typical shonen anime protagonist, when he’s so much more than that. I have to admit that I also criticized AC Cloud the first few times I watched the movie, but later I came to fully understand why he acted the way he did. Everything he went through before and during the events of FFVII was incredibly traumatic, so it makes perfect sense that he’d end up dealing with survivor’s guilt and depression afterward. Cloud is an amazing character to me, I love him so much…

And if I remember correctly Tifa mentions Cloud recovers his strength like he was at the end of FF7. Which would mean Cloud is at his strongest when he is true to himself.

This is exactly how i interpreted advent children as well. I think as well people forget by Advent Children Cloud is 23 years old but he missed 5 years of growing up from the ages of 16 to 21. Mentally he’s 18 and not equipped to deal with the trauma from the Neibelheim event right up to the end of 7 and beyond.
