@haleykloha: The media romanticizes abusive and coercively controlling relationships AND part of how it does that is my punishing characters for leaving or the relationships ending. #coercivecontrol #abuse #domesricabuseawareness #education #dv
Aaah yes thank you for pointing this out, especially about The Notebook, which (as a survivor myself) has always given me a huge ick!

Not to mention how twilight and other vampire media romanticize the idea of a (MUCH) older men and teen girls

Do you think it’s a lack of awareness of what is actually healthy? I believe we’re all being groomed for capitalism, sure. But there’s also a huge lack in prevention and understanding.

I think greys anatomy got better after Derek died. I think her character was much more powerful without him.

Are there any healthy romance movies? Is that just “too boring” for most people?

This is also partly a massive media literacy problem. Story tellers are supposed to show drama, that’s the job. The characters in stories are not meant to be examples of how to be human.

We ask - what if I missed my Prince it’s a disaster! Instead of oh my goodness, I could’ve made a huge mistake there and I built my life and it’s great

Also, when you are a child whom is living in an environment of DV it distorts what love, respect, healthy relationships, safe boundaries, etc. is suppose to look like. For girls going into the dating scene it makes them more vulnerable to enter a relationship with DV and making it even harder for us to even identify it during or even after post separation. It took me approximately five years post separation to identify DV and SA.

I remember when I started noticing the conditioning. Anytime a leading male character is violent, even sadistically violent as long as it’s towards a bad guy it’s okay and don’t worry he’s a good guy he’d never use violence against you. I was watching something and I stopped and was like, no that doesn’t track. That guy is an abuser.
